Revolution / Peter Ackroyd. - Wydanie 1. - London : Macmillan, 2016. - IX, 403 strony : ilustracje kolorowe ; 24 cm.
Index s. 385-403.
History of England / Peter Ackroyd ; 4
Revolution, the fourth volume of Peter Ackroyd's enthralling History of England begins in 1688 with a revolution and ends in 1815 with a famous victory. In it, Ackroyd takes readers from William of Orange's accession following the Glorious Revolution to the Regency, when the flamboyant Prince of Wales ruled in the stead of his mad father, George III, and England was - again - at war with France, a war that would end with the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo. Late Stuart and Georgian England marked the creation of the great pillars of the English state. The Bank of England was founded, as was the stock exchange, the Church of England was fully established as the guardian of the spiritual life of the nation and parliament became the sovereign body of the nation with responsibilities and duties far beyond those of the monarch. It was a revolutionary era in English letters, too, a time in which newspapers first flourished and the English novel was born. It was an era in which coffee houses and playhouses boomed, gin flowed freely and in which shops, as we know them today, began to proliferate in our towns and villages. But it was also a time of extraordinary and unprecedented technological innovation, which saw England utterly and irrevocably transformed from a country of blue skies and farmland to one of soot and steel and coal.

And Thereby Hangs a Tale / Jeffrey Archer. - Wydanie 2. - London : Macmillan, 2010. - [11], 273 stron ; 22 cm.
Hamwal and Nisha fall in love while waiting for a traffic light to turn green in Delhi… thus begins one of the 15 short stories Jeffrey Archer has gathered from around the globe during the past five years in this, his sixth collection, of enthralling short stories. From Germany comes Masterpiece, the tale of a priceless oil painting that has remained in the same family for over 200 years, until… To the Channel Islands, and Members Only, where a golf ball falls out of a Christmas cracker and a young man’s life will never be the same again… To Italy, where a young man trying to book a hotel room ends up in bed with the receptionist, unaware that she… To England, where, in High Heels, a woman explains to her husband why a pair of designer shoes couldn’t have gone up in flames because… Some of these stories will make you laugh. Others will bring you to tears. And once again, every one of them will keep you spellbound.

A Calamity of Souls / David Baldacci. - Wydanie 2. - London : Macmillan, 2024. - IX, [5], 480 stron ; 24 cm.
Set in the tumultuous year of 1968 in southern Virginia, a murder case sets a duo of Black and white lawyers against a deeply unfair system as they work to defend their wrongfully-accused Black defendants in this courtroom drama from the number one bestselling author David Baldacci. Jack Lee is a white lawyer from Freeman County, Virginia, who has never done anything to push back against racism, until he decides to represent Jerome Washington, a Black man charged with killing an elderly and wealthy white couple. Doubting his decision, Lee fears that his legal skills may not be enough to prevail in a case where the odds are already stacked against both him and his client. And he quickly finds himself out of his depth when he realizes that what is at stake is far greater than the outcome of a murder trial. Desiree DuBose is a Black lawyer from Chicago who has devoted her life to furthering the causes of justice and equality for everyone. She comes to Freeman County and enters a fractious and unwieldy partnership with Lee in a legal battle against the best prosecutor in town. Yet DuBose is also aware that powerful outside forces are at work to blunt the victories achieved by the Civil Rights era. Lee and DuBose could not be more dissimilar. On their own, neither one can stop the prosecution’s deliberate march towards a guilty verdict and the electric chair. But together, the pair fight for what once seemed impossible: a chance for a fair trial and true justice.

Simply Lies / David Baldacci. - London : Macmillan, 2023. - [6], 418 stron ; 24 cm.
Following a disastrous divorce, former New Jersey detective Mickey Gibson is now employed by a global investigation company ProEye to track down some of the extremely wealthy who seem bent on not paying their debts. Mickey misses police work, but it made no room for her new role as the sole carer of two young children. When Mickey is asked by Arlene Robinson, a colleague from ProEye, to inventory an old mansion owned by Rutger Novak, a notorious former arms dealer, she discovers a decomposed body in a secret room. Apparently, Novak has cheated ProEye clients out of millions in the past and now they want to nail him. As the police investigation begins, they discover that there is no Arlene Robinson working for ProEye. Nor does the mansion with a body belong to Novak. The dead man is a local, wealthy recluse with a mysterious past. Mickey is in trouble for being duped, but 'Arlene' is very clever and seems able to convince anyone of anything. A sinister and compelling cat-and-mouse contest between Mickey and the woman with a secret agenda – who has no name, and seemingly no morals or empathy, and who harbours one big secret.

Genesis / Robin Cook. - London : Macmillan, 2019. - [2], 387 stron ; 24 cm.
(Jack Stapleton and Laurie Montgomery / Robin Cook ; 12)
When the body of social worker Kera Jacobsen shows up on Chief Medical Examiner Laurie Montgomery’s autopsy table, it appears at first that she was the victim of a tragic drug overdose. But for Laurie and her new pathology resident, the brilliant but outspoken Dr. Aria Nichols, further investigation reveals an alarming discovery. The young woman was ten weeks pregnant when she died, but nobody seems to know who the father was – or whether he holds the key to Kera’s final moments alive. While Laurie faces a personal crisis with the support of her husband, forensic pathologist Jack Stapleton, the impulsive Aria investigates a controversial new technique to progress the case: using DNA databases to track down those who don’t want to be found. Working with experts at a genealogy website based in New York, she plans to trace the foetus’s DNA in the hopes of identifying the mystery father. After Kera’s closest friend is found murdered days later, the need for answers becomes critical. Because someone out there clearly doesn’t want Kera’s secrets to come to light . . . and if Aria gets any closer to the truth, she and Laurie face becoming targets for a ruthless killer.

Pandemic / Robin Cook. - Wydanie 2. - London : Macmillan, 2019. - [4], 386, [4] strony ; 20 cm.
(Jack Stapleton and Laurie Montgomery / Robin Cook ; 11)
In New York City, a young, seemingly healthy woman is struck down by a respiratory attack as she heads home on the subway. By the time she arrives in Manhattan, she's dead. She ends up on forensic pathologist Jack Stapleton's autopsy table, which reveals surprising findings about the cause of death. Fearing the woman's case could be the first in a severe outbreak of a deadly airborne virus, Jack works in overdrive for a diagnosis. As the inconclusive tests come back, Jack urges his wife, and chief medical examiner, Dr. Laurie Montgomery, to sound the alarm at the mayor's office, concerned that more cases may follow. When further cases do occur around the city, and then in Los Angeles, London and Rome, Jack enters a race against time to discover the link that connects all the victims before it's too late . . .

When you read this book, you will make many assumptions. It's about a jealous wife, obsessed with her replacement. It's about a younger woman set to marry the man she loves. The first wife seems like a disaster; her replacement is the perfect woman. You will assume you know the motives, the history, the anatomy of the relationships. You will be wrong. The Wife Between Us is the first collaboration between Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen.

As staff at the school close ranks, the disappearance of young pupil Rory Millar and the death of an elderly Classics master provide Jazz with important leads, but are destined to complicate the investigation further. As snow covers the landscape and another suspect goes missing, Jazz must also confront her personal demons . . . Then, a particularly grim discovery at the school makes this the most challenging murder investigation of her career. Because Fleat House hides secrets darker than even Jazz could ever have imagined . . .
