Built to replace both the A-7 Corsair II light attack aircraft and the F-4 Phantom II fighter in Navy service, the F/A-18 evolved from Northrop's YF-17 in the late 1970s. Production aircraft reached the Navy in May 1980, with the Marine Corps receiving Hornets two years later. More than 800 examples would eventually be built for American service, with a further 500 aircraft being sold to seven export customers. Earning its battle spurs in April 1986 flying strike missions against Libya from U.S. carriers in the Mediterranean, the Hornet would subsequently participate in Operation Desert Storm five years later and the various "policing" operations in Iraq and the Balkans that followed. Still very much in frontline use with the Navy and Marine Corps today, the "legacy" Hornet, as all non-Super Hornet variants have been dubbed, provides the backbone for carrier-based naval aviation.

More than 70 different tractors are shown in this photographic history, many in action and in many different countries. It traces their development from the first steam engines on wheels which used belts to drive farm machinery and developed into traction engines, used on farms by pulling a plough on cables between two engines. Moving into the 20th century, it discusses stationary internal combustion engines which began to be put on wheels and moved around a farm to drive threshing machines by belt. Firms like Allis-Chalmers, Benz, Lloyd, Jelbart, Glasgow, Fordson, Bates, and Hart-Parr are remembered, famous names which have faded away or been taken over. A few companies, such as Case and Massey, started in the middle of the 19th century and continue today on a global scale. John Deere started making ploughs in 1837 and is now the largest manufacturer in the world. Developments which have caused a giant leap forward are discussed, such as the use of rubber pneumatic tires rather than metal wheels, turbo-charged diesel engines, and the hydraulic three-point hitch system designed by Ferguson, which is still used today in some form on most modern machines.

Within days of the invasion, Germany was at war with France, Great Britain and much of the Commonwealth, but by the end of 1941 - by which time Japan and the United States had been plunged into war - the conflict had engulfed virtually the entire planet. World War II witnessed the mobilisation of more than 100 million military personnel. Here was 'total war' on a scale never previously experienced by any of the countries involved. The conflict eclipsed everything: industry, technology, the economy and home life. It transformed the lives of an entire generation of men and women, who grew up under the shadow of violence, separation and loss. It was also fought in every conceivable terrain and theatre, from the arctic conditions of the Soviet winter to the tropical landscape of the Pacific islands, with the battle for seas and skies being equally brutal. By the time it ended in September 1945, World War II had claimed the lives of more than 50 million people, and it witnessed the only use of nuclear weapons in warfare to this day.
