Blood on the Strand / Susanna Gregory. - London : Sphere, 2014. - [6], 457 stron ; 20 cm.
(Thomas Chaloner / Susanna Gregory ; 2)
Na okładce: A Thomas Chaloner Mystery.
Public London is executing plans to mark the third anniversary of the Restoration. Private London – murky, dangerous and seething with intrigue – is entertaining other plans. And other executions. Like the death of wealthy merchant Matthew Webb, whose blood is spilled on the Strand one night, and the killing of an apparent vagrant during a royal procession. Intelligence agent Thomas Chaloner soon realises that both murders point in one direction: upwards, towards the great and supposedly good whose wily ploys seep from the sewers of Spitalfields to the palace of White Hall. A delightful, chilling, labyrinthine and always intriguing web around Restoration London, breathing life – both high and low – into the past.

The Body in the Thames / Susanna Gregory. - London : Sphere, 2012. - [8], 468 stron : mapa ; 20 cm.
(Thomas Chaloner / Susanna Gregory ; 6)
Na okładce: A Thomas Chaloner Adventure.
London swelters in a heatwave in the summer of 1664, and in the corridors of power the temperature is equally high as an outbreak of war with the Dutch threatens to become a reality. In the dilapidated surroundings of the Savoy Hospital, a delegation from the Netherlands has gathered for a final attempt to secure peace between the two nations. Thomas Chaloner, active in Holland during Cromwell's time, knows many of the delegates, including the sister of his late wife. Then the body of his former brother-in-law is found in the Thames. Chaloner discovers that the dead man has left enigmatic clues pointing to a motive for his murder. Was he involved in a plot to steal the crown jewels, or did he fall foul of one of the many people in London who are determined that the peace talks will fail?

A Bone of Contention / Susanna Gregory. - London : Sphere, 2012. - [2], 506 stron : mapa ; 18 cm.
(Matthew Bartholomew / Susanna Gregory ; 3)
Na okładce: A Matthew Bartholomew Chronicle.
Cambridge, 1392. Matthew Bartholomew, physician to Michaelhouse College, is called to examine some mysterious bones found in the King's Ditch. Next day he is called to the Ditch again: a student has been found dead there. Meanwhile, there is unrest in the town, and the strange disappearance of Dominica, former lover of the dead student and daughter of Waterstone, the well-known Principal of a Cambridge student hostel. Are these events connected? Then a skeletal hand is found in the Ditch, hailed by townsfolk as the final remains of local martyr Simon d'Ambrey, and hence a holy relic. When Bartholomew finds that the hand is wearing a ring apparently identical to a pair that were worn by Dominica and her ex-lover, and now missing, he knows that his investigative skills are called for. An engaging and intricate historical mystery.

(Thomas Chaloner / Susanna Gregory ; 3)
Na okładce: A Thomas Chaloner Adventure in Restoration London.
In 1663 the summer in London was chill and wet, a bleak contrast to the sun of Portugal and Spain from where Thomas Chaloner has just returned. He finds that much has changed during his four months' absence. A tax on printed newsheets has led to a plethora of handwritten pamphlets and the coffee houses are abuzz with the rivalry between the two main producers, and with the hypocritical activities of L'Estrange, a man appointed to censor the news, but who also profits by its dissemination. Then, to his deep sorrow, Chaloner learns that his friend Maylord is dead, reputedly from eating green cucumbers, but he has to put his grief to one side while he reports to his employer. He is immediately given a task: to investigate the strange death of one of L'Estrange's lackeys, a solicitor named Newburne who died after partaking of some cucmber... Eminent physicians might claim such food is dangerous, but Chaloner's own experience tells him that two such deaths within days of each other are no coincidence. Why should a sensitive musician and a shady solicitor have met such similar ends?

London in the spring of 1665 is a city full of fear. There is plague in the stews of St Giles, the Dutch fleet is preparing to invade and a banking crisis threatens to leave Charles II's government with no means of paying for the nation's defence. Amid the tension, Thomas Chaloner is ordered to investigate the murder of Dick Wheler, one of the few goldsmith-bankers to have survived the losses that have driven others to bankruptcy – or worse. At the same time, a French spy staggers across the city, carrying the plague from one parish to another, and the body count from the disease and from the fever of avarice starts to rise alarmingly...

(Thomas Chaloner / Susanna Gregory ; 11)
Na okładce: The Eleventh Thomas Chaloner Adventure.
In the sapping summer heat of 1665, the King, his retinue and anyone with sufficient means has fled the plague-ridden city, its half-deserted streets echoing to the sound of bells tolling the mounting number of deaths. At Chelsea, a rural backwater by the river, with fine mansions leased to minor members of the Court, there are more immediate concerns: the government has commandeered the theological college to house Dutch prisoners of war and a vicious strangler is stalking the neighbourhood. Thomas Chaloner is sent to investigate the murder of the first victim, an inmate of a private sanatorium known as Gorges. He soon relises that Gorges has stronger links to the prison than just proximity, and that the influx of strangers offers plenty of camouflage for a killer – a killer who has no compunction about turning on those determined to stop his murderous rampage.

(Thomas Chaloner / Susanna Gregory ; 14)
Na okładce: The Fourteenth Thomas Chaloner Adventure.
In the spring of 1666 everyone's first reaction to a sudden death at the palace of White Hall is that the plague has struck, but the killing of Thomas Chiffinch was by design, not disease. Chiffinch was holder of two influential posts, and rival courtiers have made no secret of their wish to succeed to those offices. To Thomas Chaloner, ordered to undertake the investigation, this gives a whole host of suspects an ample motive for murder. Chaloner finds the city abuzz with talk of a Clerkenwell soothsayer's dire predictions that a rain of fire will destroy the capital on Good Friday. He initially dismisses such talk as nonsense, but as he uncovers ever more connections to Clerkenwell among his suspects, he begins to fear that there is also design behind the rumours – and that, come Easter Day, the King and his Court might find themselves the focus of yet another rebellion...

A Conspiracy of Violence / Susanna Gregory. - London : Sphere, 2007. - [6], 502 strony ; 20 cm.
(Thomas Chaloner / Susanna Gregory ; 1)
Na okładce: A Thomas Chaloner Mystery.
For some, the early years of the Restoration are giddy, glorious ones. For others, like Thomas Chaloner, they are uncertain, murky and dangerous. Thomas has just returned from ten years abroad in the employ of the Commonwealth, and is now seeking to work for his king. He manages to find a position with the Earl of Clarendon, and is sent to investigate the rumour that there is a cache of gold buried in the Tower of London. But he is quickly seduced by other, more deadly, secrets and discovers that his predecessors in Clarendon's employ was murdered... Against a backdrop of the shadows of Puritanism and of the sunlit decadence of a gaudy court, Susanna Gregory has woven a compelling tale of the baggage of betrayal, the weight of secrets and the pit of vipers that eternally infest the corridors of power.

The plague raging through London in 1655 has emptied the city. Those who are left are prepared to risk their health for money – selling dubious 'cures' at wildly inflated prices. Also amongst them are those who hold in their hands the future of the city's most iconic building – St Paul's Cathedral. Both sides have fanatics who have been fighting eah other since the Civil Wars. When Thomas Chaloner reluctantly returns to London to investigate a recently discovered skeleton, he dicovers also that someone is determined to thwart him by any means, and that he could become yet another victim in the battle for the cathedral's future.

As well as investigating the murder, Chaloner is charged with tracking down the leaders of a fanatical sect known as the Fifth Monarchists. A Murder on London Bridge / Susanna Gregory. - London : Sphere, 2014. - [8], 455 stron : mapa ; 20 cm.
(Thomas Chaloner / Susanna Gregory ; 5)
Na okładce: A Thomas Chaloner Adventure.
Thomas Chaloner has forged a living as spy to the Lord Chancellor, the Earl of Clarendon, since the early days of the Restoration. Now, in February 1664, he is aware of an undercurrent of restlessness on the streets of London. The coffee houses are thick with rumours. There is anger at the new laws governing church attendance, and a deepening contempt for the loucheness of the court. And there is murder. The infamous church-smasher Dick Culmer is killed among the ramshackle buildings of London Bridge, and Chaloner's investigations link Culmer with a group of puritan conspirators. Further west, in the Palace of White Hall, Chaloner gradually realises that the ring-leaders of a rebellion are planning an explosive climax to achieve their goals. Desperately racing against time, Chaloner is determined to thwart them – as determined as they are to prevent him revealing their true intentions...

Thomas Chaloner is relieved to be summoned home from Tangier. Back in London, and reunited with his new wife, he is nonetheless exasperated by the reason for his return. His master, the Earl of Clarendon, has recalled him to investigate petty theft from the construction site of Clarendon's embarrassingly sumptuous new house near Piccadilly. However, withing hours of his return, Chaloner is embroiled in rumours of assassination, a stolen corpse and a scheme to frame the Queen for treason. Gradually he realises that all these events have links to the violence and corruption he has witnessed on the north African coast, and all are rooted at the heart of the capital's establishment. Courtiers vying for a share of the riches to be had from trading overseas are not going to have their ambitions thwarted by anyone, least of all by Chaloner...

The people of London are recovering quickly from the ravages of the plague, none faster than the Court of Charles II, where corruption and debauchery have rebounded at a frenetic pace. But as White Hall prepares for a grandiose ball in honour of a long-dead, English-born Pope, the markets and coffee houses of the city become awash with portents of a coming disaster. A series of mysterious killings in the capital require the investigation of Thomas Chaloner. His only clue is the murder weapon: an unusually long, slender blade. Pulling on this single thread leads Thomas into a tapestry of conspiracy, claims of the Second Coming, and the reappearance of regicides. As the date of the great ball looms closer, Chaloner fears a dangerously credible conspiracy against the throne, and he has very little time to prevent history from repeating itself.

Na okładce: A Thomas Chaloner Adventure.
Christmas in London in 1663 is a very different festival from the austere ones of Cromwell's rule – though some disapprove of the relaxed revelries, including Christopher Vine, a Treasury clerk respected for his diligence and probity, working in solitary piety in the Painted Chamber of the Palace of Westminster. But he is not alone. A killer waits in the draughty hall to ensure Vine will not live to see in the New Year. He is not the only government official to die that season, and in the malicious atmosphere of White Hall the Lord Chancellor fears his enemies will skew any investigation to cause him maximum damage. He decided to commission his own inquiries and, with his suspicions centred on Greene, another clerk, he instructs Thomas Chaloner to prove that Greene is the killer. Chaloner, though, can prove otherwise, but unravelling the reasons behind the employer's suspicions is as complex as discovering the motives for the killings. His search for the real murderer plunges him into a stinking seam of corruption, where the pickings are so rich that men are prepared to go to any lengths to protect their profits: corruption that leads towards the royal apartments and to people determined to make Christmas 1663 Chaloner's last...
